HMRC hands ‘Expert of the Year' award to civil servant behind tax raid on farmers
One of the architects of Labour's inheritance tax raid on farmers and pensions has been awarded 'Expert of the Year' by the taxman.
Civil servant, James Mee, who works as head of inheritance tax analysis at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and is largely responsible for the design of the Budget tax raid, was handed the gong last month.
He attributed the award to his work on cancelling agricultural reliefs for farms, as well as levying the death duty on pensions.
Rachel Reeves announced that inheritance tax would be extended to unspent pensions from April 2027, a move predicted to raise more than £1.4bn in the 2029-2030 tax year.
The Chancellor also announced that farms and businesses, which previously benefited from a 100pc relief from inheritance tax, would pay a 20pc levy on anything over £1m from next year.
